Este hito le preparó el camino, bajo una sed insaciable de conocimiento, a continuar su carrera en tecnologías emergentes y en la lingüística.Zúñiga dice que su definición del éxito es similar al de la fábula de la liebre y la tortuga: lento, constante y tenaz, pero buscando mejorar. The reference to Salem Witch Trials brings to mind the persecution of witches in Salem, Massachusetts, along with the assumption that those found guilty of the crime of witchcraft were burned at the stake. But this too is a myth, as are other things believed to be true about the witch trials in Salem.Here are three common so-called facts about the Salem Witch Trials that are actually myths.Trials spurred by religious beliefs and paranoiaOf course religion played a part in the trials, but with a war raging in nearby areas, refugees fled to the other colonies, including colonial Salem Town. The displaced people drew upon the town’s resources, creating concern among the town’s Puritans about access to the area’s wealth and agriculture. In fact, the wife of one of the town’s religious officials, Minister Cotton Mather, was one of the women accused during the trials. The idea that religion fueled the accusations, trials and resulting executions, is likely linked to the European history, where tens of thousands witches were executed in the name of Christianity.Salem witches were burned at the stakeThis myth is also probably rooted in the European history. Think of Joan of Arc, whose story of being convicted of witchcraft and burned at the stake is widely known. From the 1300s to the 1600s in particular, many convicted witches across Europe were burned (at the stake, or otherwise), but in the case of the Salem Witches, 19 of those who were found guilty were hanged on a ledge overlooking the town, and some died during their time of imprisonment.The only victims were women (and, therefore, humans)The focus always seems to be on witches – females – as the victims of the witch trials in Salem. People have been fascinated with publications since before the existence of the printing press – from classic writings to academic journals to sensationalistic fake news, the printed word has an important and significant impact on our mainstream culture.Fast-forward to today’s digital information age and we see that an ever-growing consumption for news and articles has exploded wildly beyond the ability of Gutenberg’s machine to create even one page! It would be almost impossible to think of Twitter’s thousands of 140-character limit posts without its audience and their need for rapid message fragments while communicating their likes, dislikes and experiences. The ubiquity of media news that’s published by just about anyone who has access to the internet and a social media platform has dramatically changed the way legitimate and false information circulates.Many North Americans distrust their media news sources, especially from social media sitesIn a recent poll, Ipsos and CIGI reported that 90% of Canadians have fallen for fake news online. By comparison, Americans see made-up news as one of the 5 biggest problems that affects their confidence in society, according to a recent Pew Research Center (PRC) survey. Both percentages are significant because target audiences can be manipulated through rhetoric that aims to spread mass-misinformation.PRC reports that “U.S. adults who prefer to get their news through social media are more likely to share fake news than those who prefer to get news via conventional methods, such as newspapers, TV or websites.” Despite this, the circulation of traditional newspapers is decreasing. Weekday print circulation decreased 12% and Sunday print circulation decreased 13%.”Although traditional newspaper readership has declined compared to the growth of online media news prevalently found on social media and other platforms, the transition from the printed page to the virtual page has transcended many challenges. - [July 4th: Not Independence Day](https://trelectronic.com/article-july-4th-not-independence-day/): Did you know that the Fourth of July isn’t really America’s Independence Day?Sure, every year, there are concerts and family get-togethers and decorations and fireworks to celebrate America’s freedom on July 4th, claiming to honor the day of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. But, despite the pomp of the annual celebrations that claim to mark the day America gained its independence from the British rule, the fact is that America was still made up of British colonies on July 4, 1776 – and remained so for years to follow.There are a few reasons why July 4th isn’t the true day of America’s independence. Continental Congress voted in favor of independence on July 2nd, and President John Adams believed that July 2nd would become the recognized holiday. It was on that day that the first draft of the independence document was drafted. Congress approved a revised version on July 4th, and while some members signed the document that day, not all members did. The final reading of the declaration occurred on July 8th, and some members who were present at a meeting on August 2nd signed the document that day. Secret Congress journals published in 1821 indicate that delegates from New York did not agree to sign until July 15th, and other members signed in August. While there seems to be an assumption that a ceremonial signing of the document took place, and that the date of this signing is celebrated annually on “Independence Day,” no such official or ceremonial event took place.Although Congress asserted their desire and plans for independence from British rule, it was ignored by King George III, and the Revolutionary War continued. The King made no mention of the existence of the Declaration of Independence until October of 1776, and America didn’t officially become an independent country until the signing of the Treaty of Paris, which ended the war and separated the colonies from Britain, on September 13, 1783 – more than 7 years after the writing of the declaration. Like all magnetostrictive measuring systems from TR Electronic, the LM_S 34 functions free of friction. The position is transmitted by a movable permanent magnet. These magnets are available as sliders that slide on the profile housing of the LM_S 34 or as block magnets which have to be guided by the mechanics of the measured axis. The latter solution even allows for "overriding" of the sensor end. This makes it possible to realize innovative machine concepts in which the same sensor system is used.Linear displacement measuring systems based on magnetostriction detect the position of moving machine parts. TR Electronic currently offers both: the industrial solution LM_I 46 with resolutions of 0.001 mm, which can also be directly equipped with Industrial Ethernet, and the basic LM_B 48 solution that has a measuring range of 2.5 m and with a resolution of 0.1 mm. - [A View of the Past — No Time Machine Required](https://trelectronic.com/article-view-past-no-time-machine-required/): You don’t need a time machine to look into the past.While you would need a time machine to experience the past, all you need to do to see the past is to look up at the night sky. Because of the distance between objects in our solar system and other areas of space from earth, it takes an amount of time for the light that we see when looking at stars and planets to reach us – so by the time we see it, we are actually looking at a view of the past.Here on earth, we usually talk about distances in terms of miles or kilometers. Perhaps it’s that you walk 2 miles to and from work, or you drive 250 kilometers to your cottage. Using these measurements makes sense because typically, the distances aren’t very large, so the numbers are easy to understand. While we can still use these numbers for distances in space, the numbers become quite large because of the vast amounts of distance involved. For example, even staying within our own solar system, the sun is 150 million kilometers (93 million miles) away from earth. This means it takes a bit more than 8 minutes for the light emitted by the sun to reach us – so, by the time it arrives, it’s from the past.Because of the vast distances, we often use the light-year as a unit of measurement instead of miles or kilometers. A light-year is the distance that light travels in one year, which is 9.46 trillion kilometers (or, 5.88 trillion miles). The Andromeda Galaxy, which is the closest galaxy to ours, is 2.5 million light-years away. Considering this, it’s understandable that using miles or kilometers to measure this would be difficult. A view of Andromeda today is actually from 2.5 million years ago, because that is how long the light takes to reach us here on earth.The farthest known galaxy in the observable universe is called GN-z11. Viewing this galaxy today is actually viewing it as it was 13.4 billion years ago; however, due to the expansion of the universe, the galaxy has “moved’ and is now 32 billion light-years away, so light that is emitted from that galaxy now will take 32 billion years to reach earth.In case you’re wondering, 32 billion light-years is equivalent to approximately 302,743,375,123,000,000,000,000 kilometers, or 188,116,011,942,000,000,000,000 miles. (So, you can see why we use light-years of measurement, instead!)

Boasting 16 colour-receptive cones (compared to humans, who have just three), this crustacean can perceive ten times more colour than a person, including the ultraviolet spectrum.Soaring above the clouds, eagles’ eyes are known for their exceptional long-distance vision. They can see clearly about 8 times farther humans can, and are able to spot prey at a 2-mile range. Their eyes’ photoreceptors, just like those of the peacock mantis shrimp, allow eagles to see in UV light. However, their biggest limitation is night vision.Keeping up with natureOwls may not soar as high as eagles, but their binocular, nocturnal vision is more sophisticated than any low-light photosensitive lens. Their eyes have a reflective surface behind their retina through a thin layer that allows for the collection of surrounding light at twice the amount of other bird species. Because they have more rods than humans do, they have greater light sensitivity.Since the human ocular anatomy limits us in comparison to other species, we have devised camera-like lenses and instrumentation to help us detect and perceive beyond our range of visible light.
